Chicken Ark Plans
Building a chicken ark (or chicken tractor as it is known in the USA) is a
simple and convenient way to house a small number of hens. What makes it work well is that this chicken house
is mobile, it is made so that it only needs 1 person to move it around your garden/ yard. There are many
chicken ark plans, it all depends on how much space and how fancy you want it to be.
Chicken ark plans are designed so that there is no "bottom" or floor. This will allow your chickens to scratch
and peck around on the ground for bugs, worms etc and they will end up fertilising the ground with their chicken
droppings. Chicken droppings have very high nitrogen levels so are great for the garden.

A good choice is an A Frame about 6 feet long by 4 feet wide. An ark or tractor
this size will be suitable for about 5/6 hens, but not too large that it will be hard to move around the
garden.

Chicken ark plans should include features such as safety, shade, warmth, perching facilities, and designed so it
is easy to clean. Hens will lay more eggs and be more happy in a healthy and clean home. A raised perch will
provide them a place off the ground to sleep, and keep them dry when it rains. This should be in the shaded area.
What is also very important is that there is some way to easily move the ark – such as wheels at one end, so that
you do not end up dragging it all the time. It is vital that you move the chicken ark around the garden every
few days so as to provide the hens with new forage and it will help your garden get regularly fertilized and
provide the hens new areas to forage.
Buying a chicken ark or coop can be very expensive. You can build one for much
much less, plus there is also the added satisfaction that you did it yourself. There are many guides out there
with great step by step instructions – even for the novice diy. You can check out how to build one of your own
